If the amount of Cholesterol (fat) floating around your blood is too high, then it will fur up all your arteries and block them.

summary         assessment

How Cholesterol harms you.

It furs up the arteries, so that they aren't as elastic as they used to be. Narrowed arteries are liable to block giving heart attacks  or strokes. Even teenagers arteries begin to fur, depending on what they are permitted to eat.

What is a normal level of Cholesterol?

total cholesterol of less than 5 is ideal. In high risk patients like diabetics or people who've already got heart disease, we like it below 4.
Anything above 7 is immediately serious.
British average is 6 !
Average in a typical Chinese village, where the main diet is rice and shoots is 2.

Isn't there a good and bad Cholesterol?

the LDL and Triglycerides are the bad cholesterols. The HDL is the good cholesterol. The first time someone has their cholesterol taken, a fasting sample is asked for  so that a full profile is processed. That way we know which particular cholesterol is the problem.

Should I be taking tablets to help reduce my Cholesterol?

No, they have their own side effects and risks. Try exercising and reducing the fat in your diet to nearly zero.
Plant stanols, BenecolFlora can help but be careful about amounts. The drinks are fine, but using too much of the spread can itself give you too many calories!.

Simvastatin 10mg is available over the counter, But check with doctor first.

If your overall risk of heart disease is over 20% risk in 5yrs, then it is worthwhile taking a prescribed statin tablet, if you cannot achieve a normal cholesterol by your best diet.  Of course, being on a Statin doesn't give you the excuse to eat what you like!
